My parents used to work at Tata Steel when I was a few years old
They moved from the Jamshedpur office to the Pune office. We were put up in a nice hotel. My parents were excited by this new journey, I probably was too
In the early 90s, there were no mobile phones to stay in touch or track people
The truck that was carrying our household items, and our car, was supposed to reach in a week. As we got ready to move out, my parents were given some bad news
The truck had got lost on the way
As a young couple, they immediately panicked. With the time at the hotel about to get over, we were all alone in a completely new city. We had nothing to fall back on
But as soon as Dad's boss got to know, he acted
He let us know we could stay at hotel indefinitely. They would send a search team to find the missing truck
All of this was at company cost
My parents were overwhelmed with the gesture. It took almost a month for the truck to reach us in Pune. Instead of panic-stricken employees, my parents were filled with gratitude
Why am I telling you this story?
We discussed it again more than 2 decades later today. That is the power of an incredible employer, that takes care of its employees above all else. No branding, marketing, advertising can create this.
It is the Tata way. RIP to the legend, Mr Tata
